About 10 years ago, I was developing my own ordinary bipedal robot. But it was not very useful, and I felt that the market for it was not big enough, so I began to wonder if there was a robot that would be fun and useful to have at home or at work. What I came up with was that if robots could be made in the form of cartoon characters, I am sure many people would be interested. So I spoke with the president of a company that provides IT systems for making animations and other products. I showed him a conventional type of robot (see photo above) that we had developed, and asked him, ”Can’t we do some new business by collaborating this with animation?” He said, “I think it would be interesting, but there are two things wrong with this robot. One is that it is not slim, and the other is that it is noisy.” I couldn’t even squeak at this. Because I had told the two ”Most Difficult Things to solve from the standpoint of a robot developer”. But it was a moment when I realized that if I did not solve these two problems, there would be no robot that could be used at home or at work.
約10年ほど前ですが、私は自分でも普通の２足歩行ロボットを開発していました。しかしそれはあまり使い道がなく、そのマーケットは大きくないなと感じて、家庭や職場などに居て楽しく便利なロボットはないのだろうかと考え始めました。そこで思いついたのは、ロボットをアニメなどのキャラクターの形にすることができれば、『きっと多くの人が興味を持ってくれるだろう』ということでした。そこでアニメなどを作るITシステムを提供している会社の社長さんとお話をしました。私が、自社で開発した従来タイプのロボットをお見せして、『これとアニメとのコラボで何か新しいビジネスができませんか？』とお尋ねすると、言われたのは、『面白いと思うけど、このロボットではダメな点が二つある。一つはスリムでない事、もう一つは音がうるさいこと。』これにはぐーの音も出ませんでした。ロボットを開発している身から考えると、一番難しいことを２つ言われてしまったからです。でも確かにその二つを解決しないと家庭や仕事場でつかえるロボットはありえないなと思った瞬間でした。
