The reason why biped robots have such a sturdy, muscular shape is because joints, which are commonplace in humans, are extremely difficult to create by machine. For example, consider the shoulder joint. It has very complex movements such as swinging the arm up and down, rotating the arm, and moving the shoulder itself up, down, left, and right. Moreover, the shoulder itself is very compact in size. Just to realize one joint requires a single drive motor and a deceleration gear to decelerate the motor rotation for generating a large force.  Even a single pair is quite large, but at least two of them must be combined to create the shoulder movement. The so-called two-axis drive has to be incorporated into a small shoulder structure.
